What is net worth and how is it calculated

Net worth is everything you own minus what you owe. Pumpynotes shows it on the Total balance card, right under the big number: your money, your assets and your debts together, at today's prices and rates.

On Pro and above
The net worth line appears once you open an asset or debt wallet. These wallet kinds are part of the Pro, Business and Enterprise plans.

Your total balance tells you how much money you have today. But if your savings aren't only money (say you hold some Bitcoin or shares while also paying off a loan), the number you really want to know is a different one: when you add everything up and take away what you owe, what's left? That's your net worth.

Pumpynotes works out your net worth for you and shows it in a small line on the Total balance card on the Finance screen. In the four steps below we show you where to find that line, how it's calculated and what changes it.

1
Find the net worth line
Look at the Total balance card at the top of the Finance screen. Once you have an asset or debt wallet, a small line appears right under the card's big number: first Net worth, then Assets and Debts. If you only have money wallets, the line doesn't show, because in that case your net worth is simply your total balance.
The card's big number doesn't change: Total balance always adds up only your money wallets, such as cash, bank and card. Asset and debt wallets only go into the line underneath.
Total balance $14,598.45 Net worth $34,066.37 · Assets $29,967.92 · Debts $10,500.00

2
How net worth is calculated
The calculation has three parts: the money in your money wallets, the current value of your asset wallets and what's still owed in your debt wallets. The first two are added together and the debt is taken away.
In the example below, your money wallets hold $14,598.45: that's exactly your Total balance. Your Bitcoin and Ethereum are worth $29,967.92 today, and $10,500 is still owed on the loan. Net worth: $14,598.45 + $29,967.92 - $10,500 = $34,066.37. In the line, Assets shows the total of your asset wallets and Debts the total you still owe. Because your assets are valued at the live price, this line can change during the day even if you don't touch anything.

3
How different currencies add up
Your net worth is shown in the currency selected in Convert at the top of the dashboard. Wallets in other currencies, such as a euro account or a gold wallet valued in Turkish lira, are converted into that currency at the current rate and then added up. When you pick a different currency in Convert, the line switches to it right away.
If the rate for a currency can't be fetched at that moment, the wallets in that currency are left out of the calculation until the rate is back. Once rates refresh, the line corrects itself. You can find how rates work in Multi-currency budget tracking.
4
When your net worth changes
Like Total balance, net worth isn't a total for a period; it shows where you stand today. That's why it stays the same when you change the date range at the top.
The wallet filter does change it: when you untick a wallet in the Wallet menu of the filter bar, or hide a wallet by clicking its eye icon on the Wallets tab of the left panel, the hidden wallet is left out of your net worth too. Click the eye icon again and the wallet is back in the calculation. We explain how filters affect the other numbers in Filter your transactions by date and category. Clicking a wallet's name in the panel does the opposite: only that wallet stays and the others are left out for the moment; click again and you are back to the previous selection. When only asset wallets are left on screen, the page switches to the asset view, and the Total balance card and the net worth line don't appear while it's on.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between net worth and total balance?

Total balance only adds up the money in your money wallets: cash, bank account, card. Net worth adds the current value of your assets to that and takes away what you still owe. If you have no asset or debt wallets, the two are the same number, which is why the net worth line doesn't show.

Why can't I see the net worth line?

The line only appears once you have at least one asset or debt wallet. If you don't have one yet, all you need to do is choose Asset or Debt as the kind when you add a wallet; you can find how in Asset wallets: track your gold, crypto and stocks. These wallet kinds are available on Pro and above.

If I overpay a debt, does my net worth go up?

No. If a debt wallet's balance goes above zero, that wallet counts as zero debt in your net worth; the extra you paid doesn't count toward your net worth.

Which plans include net worth?

The net worth line appears once you open an asset or debt wallet; these wallet kinds are available on Pro, Business and Enterprise. On Free you use a single money wallet, so Total balance already shows the whole picture.
